How does the AI work?
It uses @imgly/background-removal, an open-source AI model that runs entirely in your browser via WebAssembly. The first use downloads a ~30MB model which is then cached.
What types of images work best?
Images with a clear subject against a contrasting background — portraits, product shots, and animals. Complex scenes with multiple subjects may give less accurate results.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The AI model runs locally in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.
Why is the first use slow?
The first use downloads a ~30MB AI model. After that, it is cached in your browser and subsequent uses are much faster.
Can I remove backgrounds on my phone?
Yes, but performance depends on your device. Modern phones with 4GB+ RAM handle it well. Older devices may be slower due to the AI model running in the browser.
What is the output format?
The output is always a transparent PNG. If you need JPG, use our PNG to JPG tool afterward to convert it.
Is there a file size limit?
Images up to 20MB are supported. For best performance and accuracy, images under 5MB with clear subjects work best.
